Richmond Stubbs, an artist for the ages

Newsletter #1

RStubbsGallery.com

Every artist, including myself, dreams of seeing their work all in one place and showing it to the world. The work I have done over the past 40+ years would fill up a major museum.

The subject matters that have dominated my life's work are the landscape, abstract expressionism, the figure (human and animal forms including fish, lizards and tree forms in both paintings and sculptures), and attitudes of southern behavior expressed through gestured movements. I have included several works from each of the five decades that I have been working as a professional artist (showing and selling art since 1963 through galleries and museums).

A question was asked of me recently: Why have a wilderness trust for indigenous people? Because indigenous people have been and are better "earth keepers". I remember when I lived in Ruidoso, New Mexico, the Mescalero Apaches kept their forest nice and clean, very different than the way we manage our national forests. One group would clear the forest floor and stack loose wood in lean-to forms and then another group would come along afterwards and gather the wood for their hearths. I guess it's different living in the forest as opposed to visiting one. And that is the way we have set up our national forest as a place to visit, not a place to live. If Theodore Roosevelt had not created this idea of a national forest, we would have no forest at all in these United States. Is there a happy medium? Is there a place where everybody wins. Yes, and we must be willing to listen, not just listen with human ears but also hearts. Listen to the spirits of those who have come before us, listen to the spirits of the eagle, bear, lion, dolphin and the whale.

A vision came to me once in a dream. I was walking on grassy rolling hills, and after a while I came to a high place and looked back to see where I had been. I could not see my tracks because when I walked I had bent the grass without breaking it. This felt good. This is one way in which everybody wins.

I hope you will join me in this vision for a wilderness trust for the planet on which we live. Enter the competition and become partners in this wilderness trust, and I will share your visions on this web site with the world. I drew dolphins in one of the images (for the coloring competition) so you would have the opportunity to listen to the dolphin spirit which will reveal to you a great vision for clean air and water. Also, see if you can listen to spirits of the bear, lion, the eagle and the whale and place one or all of their images in the remaining pictures to color. i think it would be a really fun idea to see a bear swimming with the dolphins. The idea of "outside the lines" is that you can add images to the existing picture format. This great vision is not a plan to create another super power but rather work in concert with the countries of the planet so they would be beneficiaries of planet restoration.

Feel free to sign up to the newsletter and I will keep you informed with the progress of the wilderness trust and the competition.
